A recent study by the University of Chicago took a look at attendance, grades, test scores, and English proficiency among English Learner students. Researchers wanted to learn more about which types of preschool programs help English learners grow. Research findings show that parents whose child qualified and were enrolled in bilingual education services (Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) and Transitional Program Instruction (TPI)) demonstrated: stronger speaking skills and reading ability, language development, and attendance. On the other hand, parents whose child qualified for services and refused bilingual education services were associated with negative implications in the long term: lower grades, attendance, and test scores.
