SNAP - Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (formerly Food Stamps) helps low-income individuals and families buy the food they need for good health.

Participants are provided with an electronic card that is accepted at most grocery stores. The Department of Human Services (IDHS) administers the program in Illinois. Most households with low income can get SNAP benefits. Eligibility is based on income and expenses as well as the number of people living and eating together.

The rules are complex, so visit IDHS Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for more information on eligibility and enrollment in the program.
