Language and Literacy

Child care provider reading to students

Before your preschooler ever learns to recognize letters, you can begin instilling a love of language and reading in them.

Your child develops the building blocks for reading and literacy when you share books with them, talk, and listen to them. Read illustrated books to your child as well as books with stories, poems, and adventure. Talk with your child about what they see in the pictures, what they think might happen next, and invite them to act out portions of the story. Talk with your preschooler as you go through your day – indoors and out - about what they are seeing, doing, and feeling.

There are many ways to support your child’s language development and love of reading. Visit the sites below for additional tips.
